New business offers pickup and delivery ski tuning service to the greater Burlington area.
November 1, 2023
This season, there’s a new ski and snowboard tuning service available in the greater Burlington area: No Bad Days. Unlike other ski and snowboard tuning operations in the area though, No Bad Days will pick up your equipment, tune it, and return it to you in three days or less. With pickup and delivery services available as far as 15 miles away from UVM, and turnaround times as quick as 24 hours, the business offers its concierge services for no additional costs to customers who are within 3 miles of UVM and can wait 3 days for delivery.
According to business owner Matt McGinnis, the purpose of the service is simple: “At No Bad Days, we have one goal for this season: to help more people have more fun on their skis and snowboards.” As a freeski coach at Mad River Glen, McGinnis says he’s noticed that skiers of all levels and abilities, even those who are competitive, often go entire seasons without tuning their equipment. The result, he believes, are a lot of days on the hill that could be made even better if everyone’s equipment had sharper edges and smoother bases.
Last year, as the season went on, McGinnis says he found himself thinking more and more about the concept of a convenience based ski and snowboard tuning service. When the season came to a close in April, McGinnis took his curiosity one step further by asking his friends on social media to respond to a brief poll centered around their relationship to tuning their gear. The outcome was eye opening: 77% of respondents wished they tuned their gear more often, with 55% citing inconvenience as a limiting factor, while another 18% said they couldn’t leave their gear at the shop for multiple days.
Over the course of the summer, the wheels kept turning as McGinnis began thinking through the logistics of actualizing a pickup and delivery, ski and snowboard tuning business. “The more I thought about it, and the more I asked people about it, it just continued to make sense. I’ve attempted to start multiple businesses over the years, and so far, this one has had the most natural, positive response.” In July, he began scouring the internet in an effort to find a reliable, affordable tuning machine. In August, he struck gold.
“One day I got a response from our region’s Wintersteiger rep who told me he knew of a machine in the area that’s in incredible shape and available at a great price. I followed up and he was right. I’d stumbled into the deal of a lifetime. The kind of deal where I thought to myself, ‘if I’m ever going to test this idea, now’s the time. This opportunity will never be better.’ So, I took the next step.”
And with that step, No Bad Days went from a monthslong vision, to a reality. Today, No Bad Days has a shop space set up with a Wintersteiger machine offering full stone grinds, as well as edge sharpening, hot wax, and base repair capabilities. After spending the month of October promoting the business mostly via word of mouth, No Bad Days is ready to open their doors in a big way.
In an effort to get the word out, No Bad Days is currently running a Grand Opening Sale, in which all tuning services are available for 50% off for the first 100 bookings. To take advantage of the sale though, you’ll want to act fast as according to McGinnis, “We’ve already taken about 30 bookings, and we’ve seen a big uptick in interest over the last couple of weeks. It seems like people are starting to think more about winter now that the temps have dropped and mountains are reporting signs of snow. I’m guessing the remainder of our Grand Opening bookings will be reserved within the next couple of weeks.”
